The Food Co-op is an autonomous co-operative that is facilitated by and operates out of premises organised and maintained by the Students’ Association. In addition, the Association provides administrative support to the co-operative.
Established by an initial Union grant, the Food Co-op is a not-for-profit service that is operated by a community collective of volunteer students on a rotating roster. The bulk of its orders are made at the Students’ Association office.
The co-operatives mission is to provide a healthy organic food source at an affordable price. The organisation participates in Orientation program events and holds occasional soup or cake stalls to promote its activity. As such, the Food Co-op adds another dimension to the cultural atmosphere of the University.
The fresh food service operates as follows:
- Customers complete an order form and selected the value of the order they want
- Volunteers collate all the orders and gauge purchase quantities required
- All food is sourced at bulk market prices and as verifiable organic produce
- The bulk purchase is brought to campus headquarters where it is boxed into the individual orders to be collected by customers
In addition to the fresh food service, the co-operative maintains a store/stock of non-perishable food items for sale at its premises. Funds in surplus are returned to the co-operative to assist in producing its own operations. Funding is primarily used to produce marketing material and philosophical pamphlets as well as to purchase and trial new products and to maintain on-site stock.
