Vertigo is the tri-weekly flagship publication of the Students’ Association and has a long history on campus. It carries wide-ranging news and events issues and informs students of local intracampus events and happenings. The magazine print run of around 2500 and is distributed to all three campuses to students from 15 Vertigo distribution points. It is fully funded by the Students’Association with some advertising revenue to supplement printing costs.
It is the formal method of communication to students about Students’ Association elections and in this context must comply with the rules concerning student elections and publication of candidate statements, platforms and issues.
The magazine is popular and historically enjoys a good reputation among students and staff. It provides a showcase forum for all students particularly in journalism, design and communications to learn about magazine production by way of informal workshops. The magazine also gives over its brand name to a specialist publication once a year – produced by the womens’ and queer collectives.
Vertigo is produced by a volunteer group of 5 editors with assistance from time to time from workshop participants. VSU has imposed on its operation the need for revenue raising and this is being approached by way of advertising. However, this source of funds while providing an incentive to the editors who may receive a percentage of revenue raised as honoraria, is expected to realistically provide very little of the magazine’s operating costs. This is due to the political sensitivities of the organisation and the historical reluctance of many organisations to advertise.
