The Students’ Association Bookshop is a not-for-profit service that has been in existence for some 20 years. The bookshop employs a full-time manager and has a rotating casual staff employing up to 10 students throughout the year. The bookshop is centrally housed in the Tower Building but operates a temporary service at peak times at the Markets campus with expansion to Kuring-gai considered for 2008.

The biggest barrier the bookshop is experiencing to further growth exists on the supply side of its operations. Most current textbook titles in the store could be sold three times over during busy periods. The Students’ Association is currently negotiating with UTS and other smaller campuses in the local area to encourage students to make their discounted books available to other students through the service. Starting this semester new collection points should see students being able to sell their books following all major exams.

Some keys points of the bookstore’s operational functions are:

  • Part-time manager with casual staff turnover of up to 10
  • Turnover of some 700 titles per month
  • Online service of real-time stock listing
  • Operates from a permanent shop-front at the Broadway campus and from a branch operation on the Haymarket campus (some consideration is being given for a Kuring-gai campus presence)
  • Casual employment offered to UTS students
  • Expansion of title range to fiction and non-fiction
  • Service is available to all members of the UTS and local community

Ed Cast NOW!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the successful Ed Cast NOW campaign in 2007. We are pleased to announce that the University has committed to trailing the technology in UTS classrooms from this year onward.

Furthermore the University has allocated substantial funding as part of its Teacing & Learning Performance Fund grant to investing in emerging educational technologies.
