By Ann-Marie Rohlfs

UTS Environment Collective is a group of students passionateabout educating themselves and others about environmental issues, and takingaction to help address these issues.

What work do we do?

Actively campaign around environmental issues, both on andoff campus – this includes a whole range of activities such as lobbying andnegotiating with governments, universities and corporations, educationcampaigns, attending protests and rallies

Participate in national campaigns and projects as part ofthe Australian Students Environment Network (ASEN), which has membercollectives at universities all around Australia.

Take part in fun training camps with ASEN, SEAN (the NSWbranch).

What's involved in being a member?

We hold weekly one-hour meetings at 12pm, Monday at theLevel 3 couches, next to the Students Association (go down the ramp oppositethe concourse cafe and it's just to your right).

Discussion groups and education sessions are held Thursdays4.30pm, in the same place as the Monday meetings.  These sessions are for learning more about enviro issues, skill shares and workshops.

Meetings are also held at Ku-Ring-Gai Campus on Wednesday at12pm in the cafeteria.

Membership is free and open to everyone.

The collective is based on direct participation by allmembers – everyone’s opinion is heard, and members choose which projects andcampaigns we undertake.

This Year's Campaigns?

In 2008, our major campaigns include:

Climate Change campaign to halt our addiction to polluting fossilfuels and switch to clean renewable energies.

Last year the Flick My Switch campaign contributed to acommitment by UTS to 2.5% renewable energy.  Help us this year as we continue to create a moresustainable campus at UTS.  Checkout www.flickmyswitch.org for more info.

Working with Indigenous Australians; often Indigenous landrights and environmental issues overlap, such as the campaign to stop the goldmining on Indigenous land at Lake Cowal, and supporting Indigenous Australiansin opposing a nuclear waste dump in the NT.

Anything you would like to campaign on? We welcome yourinput and ideas, and would love to hear from you
